Week One: Methodology Profile

What is Methodology?

Methodology in research is specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select, process and analyze information about a topic. The methodology section in a research paper allows the reader to evaluate the studies overall validity and reliability.

What is the methodology located in Jewel Yan’s Playscapes: Pure Ludens research thesis?

  • In simple terms: Human centered design.
  • Yan’s research is located in the area of spatial design and healthcare design, following the methods of traditional drawing and material exploration combined with advocation for patient-centered care as a means of information collection and how this can be used to change the connotations of a hospital space from negative and grief to fun and play especially in the realms of a children centered space to boost moral and patient recovery.

Key characteristics of the methodology:

Site diagnostics: staff interviews (to get an inside feel of how the space is working at that current point in time)

Children’s Voice: children’s design charrette (a workshop run for the kids to see what they want in the space, what they like)

  • Site diagnostics findings: The atrium (connecting space of the hospital where parents and children come to gather)
  • Site diagnostics findings: Mezzanine (area overlooking the atrium space, spaces that have café, vending machine and ATMs. Service spaces)
  • Charrette findings: outdoor themes findings from the kids (bringing nature indoors, playgrounds and free drawings)

Is there more than one methodology discussed? Identify why this might be

  • Methodology that is disccussed in the thesis Playscapes
    • Traditional drawing and material explorations
    • Methods advocating to patient centred care
  • There are more than one broard methodologies in this thesis but i think these are more ways that narrow down the way that she has conducted methods, patients being the centre of the design as the location of the research design is Starship, a childrens hospital. Sick and or injured children are the centre of the design which means that the materials that are used in the design must be forgiving and comforting as to not cause more injury or sickness and bring joy to help aid in healing and recovery.

Methodology profile

Human centered design

  • A design process that focuses on the end-users from the very beginning of the project (the starship hospital children/patients).
  • The end-users beginning test subjects throughout the design.
  • Even being used to carry out surveys to gauge what interests them, what they would like to see.
  • End-users product satisfies their need.
