Models and prototypes were most commonly used by architects and designers in the beginning of their time to test new ideas or designs as an aspect of experimentation, however over time artists have taken a liking to how models and prototypes can convey a space, an experience, or story without having to be read about. The story of what the work is laid out in front of you, readable by its simple, easy to understand form. Katrin Sigurdardottir has used models and prototypes in her work The Green Grass of Home (1997) combining architectural and topographic elements to create a compact suitcase that unfolds to reveal a series of compartments that mirror landscapes of places Sigurdardottir has visited. Recreated from her memory. Recreating her experience of a space through a spatial design approach (a cross architectural/art approach) has led to the creation of a series of square bounded boxes that represent the different experiences that Sigurdardottir had when visiting nature reserves and parks near her home.
