it was through the uninstalling phase of my presentation that i was able to look at my project through a different lens. through a refined and editing lens. through the process of subtraction of the work from the walls and the room i was able to get an even richer meaning to my work through the “less is more” approach.
Attacking my uninstall with the idea of taking away the sub themes and sub ideas first to leave the overall main ideas so that they can speak for themselves. This began to be more of a task than i had first envisaged. As well as taking the work down from the wall and presentation space i had to somehow condense it down to fit back into the A4 sized (supermarket) bag that i had previously been using the transport my collection of work from space to space.
This turned my uninstall into an uninstall/reinstall in itself. the uninstall of the wall and reinstall into the bag/packing travel container.
Pairing the work themes from the wall with themes that they did not connect to greately was a way that i could condense the work down without taking away its ability to be read at a later date. Sticking images and colour back to back t create little theme “packs”. and as the pieces got larger these packs began to be sides. one side of a borad would be one theme and when the board was flipped that theme was concealed and another theme was revealed, without the work having to be lost/forgotten.
through my uninstallation process i also chose to reimagine the idea of a continuuos journey of the string thread and how this constant moving and never being tied down completely is the soul purpose of our being and we were made to grow, made to change, and made to change other people and things around us. Through the use of string in my presentaion i though it would be interesting to use this idea of connection and change and push it to an extreme. comepletly covering the internal space of the room where i presented and housed my collection of work i began to unravel, float, throw, knot, walk with, walk around, walk over, and just be with a series of different strings of tread. to see how the space would change, how my vision of the space would change. how through the use of something so small and something so commonly used in our day to day living the themes, ideas and goals of my research can be realised. less is more.
