Atelier Bow Wow, section drawing

I was really drawn to the style of drawings by architecture firm Atelier Bow Wow and how their drawings are black and white line images and within these images they have pulled out sections and added written details about what is going on in this space. This adds even more information to what is already a really detailed and informative image/drawing. This was something i was really interested in taking through into the works that i have been creating, adding details and extra notes to images and sketches that i have created as well as add other ideas to the drawing (like other inspirations, materials, measurements and so on).

Mirrored Home/Split Machiya

japanese practice atelier bow wow has created ‘split machiya’, a private home for a couple and a single woman in tokyo, japan. sited within a densely populated neighborhood, the dwelling is composed of two mirrored structures, loosely connected by a lush central courtyard. informed by the confined plot of land, the residences feature compact and split level designs aimed at generating a visually open and integrated living environment.

Chigi House

A gabled cabin by architecture studio Atelier Bow-Wow and a faceted pod by artist Didier Faustino have been installed inside a Parisian gallery as part of an exhibition about imaginary worlds.

The two wooden installations, one by the Japanese architecture firm and one by the French artist, are on show as part of The Magical House exhibition at Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris (the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris).

The exhibition forms the second part of Transphere Exhibitions, a collection of events organised in Paris to showcase the “imaginary worlds” of emerging and established artists.

Life Tunnel

Inserted as a passage between two galleries. deformed at the entrance, a person goes from crawling in, to walking out, a metaphor for life.

The Life Tunnel was designed by Atelier Bow-Wow for the 2008 Hayward Gallery Physcho Buildings show.

Tristan Simmonds carried out the engineering design and automated the unwrapping of panels, detailing and data generation for CNC fabrication and construction.

White Limousine

Followed by a crowd and creating a small traffic jam in the Tokamachi downtown, a strange, oblong cart on wheels appears, pushed by several people dressed in white. They’re trying, in vain, to smoothly turn the corner—a humorous occasion en route to its next destination. White Limousine Yatai, painted in pure white, recalls the heavy snowfall and long winters for which this area is so well-known.

A yatai (street-side food cart) is a common sight in Japanese cities. It has a wonderful small-scale charm, encouraging interaction due to proximity between friends and strangers alike. But whereas the standard yatai is less than two meters long and run by a single person, this one stretches out to ten meters, like a limousine, requiring several people to propel and operate it. Its extreme length allows a large group to gather at one sitting, creating a banquet-like urban experience. In keeping with the color palette, the food and drink selections are also white or translucent, featuring local specialties such as rice, tofu, pickled white radish, and Japanese sake. After its debut at the 2002 Echigo-Tsumari Triennale, it has since been glimpsed at various events around Tokyo.

Pet Architecture

Atelier Bow-Wow introduced the concept of ‘Pet Architecture’ to describe a unique typology of building which takes form in left over urban spaces. This type of architecture is not at the forefront of aesthetic design or advanced technology, but produces a unique characteristic of self-appropriation in cities which forces the users to make the most of smaller spaces.
