- How have they explored, used and developed their methods?
- What are their methods? Outlined in the contents page as “exploration of the material palette”, site analysis?
A method is a way of doing something, a particular procedure for accomplishing or approaching something. In the example thesis “Playscapes: Pure Ludens by Jewel Yan, I have come to realise and see that her methods are very site and practical based. Using site analysis as a way of collecting information about the boundaries of the design, what can and cannot be achieved in this space. What is and is not allowed to happen, especially in the context of a children’s hospital atrium space. As well as site analysis being a method Jewel has used to carry out her research, she has also carried out a lot of material exploration as this is very important to think about in a hospital setting, especially in a children’s one.
- Are they clearly illustrated,
The methods of site analysis and material exploration are very clearly illustrated as the methods driving this project due to the vivid and straight forward nature of them. They are clearly outlined through the use of images. These images highlighted things of importance when analysing the site, areas of interest or disinterest. As well, images were used to illustrate how materials and colours can be used to enhance the site and create a better space for children to recover. Through colour and texture research and even research into materials and colours in surrounding park areas and points of interest. Combining these colours and textures through the use of collage, and then translating this back into the starship hospital atrium site space
- How and in what depth?
- Aims: highlight the value of play and how important this is to the recovery of a child
- Spatial designs impact on patients experience of the hospital space
- Understanding the idea of public space in a hospital setting and the impact this has on families, patients, staff
Jewel’s methods have grown out of these aims. Thinking about the space and the setting of the research being centred around the starship children’s hospital. The spatial system that she is designing/proposing must be designed in close relation to the current hospital system and fits into the role of the hospital and the atrium space without hindering the healthcare flow. It is equally as crucial that the materials, textures and colours of the area are relaxing and therapeutic for the patients and their families as this is a very stressful time having to have a loved one in the hospital generally fighting for their life.

FINAL CASE STUDY REVIEW: Connecting Methods to Methodology.
- Consider the relationship between the method and how that method was used (this can be described and illustrated in the body of the exegesis. How does the method reflect the methodology? Do they reflect the methodology?
Jewel’s methodology in Playscapes: Pure Ludens is based around the disciplines of spatial design and healthcare design. The practice-led research that explores 2 types of methodologies; traditional drawing and material exploration, and advocating for patient-centred care. The link between the methods and methodologies I, therefore, find to be very strong. As the methods of site, analysis is based around the methodology of patient-centred care, and by how examining what is already there you can discover and learn what the patients’ needs and wants are and what is possible in the given space. For the method of material exploration and texture research that has been gathered from places surrounding the Starship children’s hospital to create a greater connection between the space and the materials and colours being used as well as create a site that is safe and fun for the children and their families in the hospital.
