  • Author: Maarit Makela

Keywords:

  • Research question?
  • Artifact interpretation
  • Art
  • Process of inquiry
  • physical making
  • Practice-based
  • artifact

Summary:

  • Your annotation needs to include a summary of the key ideas of interest to you in the text you have read. Consider the following when writing your summary:
    • What topic(s) are being discussed?
    • Can you identify the author’s key contexts? (historical, political, social…)
    • What are the key ideas/arguments being stated in the text?
  • This text gives art the properties of a methodology and how this art can be used as a process to carry out an inquiry.
  • This text is highly theoretically based the idea of “knowledge gained through art and design” and how in the area of art and design research this is an increasing issue.
  • This work is both practice and theridiocal based as the work constantly refers to the idea of an artefact and how there is a lot of aesthetic thought put into the overall look of the artefact but this has a strong connection to the information that underpins the work and is the driver behind its creation.

Assessment:

  • Assess or evaluate the importance of the text by considering the following questions:
    • Is the information reliable?
    • What position does the author take in the text? How might you determine if this text is biased or objective?
    • Did you find it an interesting text, if you did, identify why it was of interest?
    • If you did not agree with it, why not?
  • I find this very interesting as this is the stage of life that i am up to right now, and this practice and theoretical based research
  • I did find this text to be very interesting to read as it follows a really structured yet loose system of how they are designing, and i also found it interesting because..
  •  it shows that research is not tidy. Some times we will find things that both answers and argue with the area that we are interested in. The way this designer has explained this work is through a practice-based approach through artefact.
  • And this idea of answering yet arguing is a very good metaphor for the artefact as this artefact gives us something physical that we can see embodies this work but it also is challenging because no matter how we make it to be viewed certain way there will always be people who do not see it like this, and this is ok.
  • This artist uses the artefact as a means of collecting and preserving information as well as making this information understandable for the viewer.
  • This text is subjective as the Makela brings all of their findings back to talk about them in relation to their own works. Even though some artists may also work this way, it is highly unlikely that all of this information would become useful to everyone that reads it.
  • This information is reliable to a certain degree as it focus on the thesis’ that have been written at both a masters and doctorial level and how these focus on how the work has been carried out and how this is very practice and theoretically based.

Reflection:

Written in the first person this reflective statement should identify your understanding of the text and its relevance to your research.

  • However, in saying this i find this idea of using an “artefact as a means of collecting and preserving information” to be a very important aspect in my area of research.
  • This is due to the fact that I am designing a series of prototypes for a shelter/structure for a nomadic person, a travelling modular structure that can be .
  • It is important that these models are considered and looked at by the nomad as a “home”
