Week Two: Methodologies and Methods

Class brainstorm of different types of methodologies that we have found in example thesis’

“Eccentric form of measure” methodology “strange form of measuring something”– Specific
– Personal
– Bespoke to the research
– Thinking hard about what they are doing and why they’re doing it
Creative practice based– Brood
– Unspecific
– The reason we are here in Mdes- to carry out creative based practice
Positivism– Paradigm
– Social science
Action research– Plug and play
– Model scientific research
– Read books about design methodologies
– Don’t have to overthink it
Co-design/action research– Good for ethics
– Plug and play as you have to back with the information that you can gather in that field of research
– Traditional -But can still be critical about what co-design means
– Critical engagement in what we are doing
– How can you ever claim this as your own design? As it is co design?

What are methods?

Methods are a particular way of accomplishing or approaching something, usually a systematic or established process. The quality of being well organized and systematic in though or action.

And, how do these relate to methodologies?

Methods are the tools and the way that you carry out research or a task, whereas methodology is the justification for using a particular method when conducting the research. Method is how the research is done and methodology is why.

Identify and provide an overview of the methods, can you see a connection between the methodology and the methods?

As the main methodology in the thesis Playscapes: Pure Ludens is human centered design it comes as no surprise that a lot of the methods that Yan used to carry our her research and collect data and information to help develop and extend her design were based around humans. More specifically the people who work in and around the children’s wards in the Starship children’s hospital, the children’s parents and family, and of course the children in the hospital themselves. Below is a list of the methods that Yan used when carrying our her research;

  • Research;
    • Existing Atrium space (site)
      • What surrounds it
      • Who uses it
      • Initial intentions of the space
      • General site analysis
    • Staff interviews
      • To understand the current state of the space
      • Current function
      • Potential
      • Constraints
      • Identify issues and design opportunities
    • Children’s design Charrette
      • A design class to gauge what children want most
